As of the end of last year outstanding loans in agricultural and rural areas around the country increased by 21.4 per cent from a year earlier, Nguyễn Quốc Hùng, director of the State Bank of Vietnam’s credit department, said.

The Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta accounted for 17.2 per cent of this, he told a recent conference on “Promoting rice production and consumption in the Mekong Delta”. Outstanding loans to the rice industry alone went up by VNĐ29.8 trillion to VNĐ99 trillion (US$4.3 billion).

The Export-Import Bank of Thailand (Exim Bank Thailand) has unveiled a new loan facility for entrepreneurs in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam who purchase products from Thai businesses, a move aimed at boosting exports to the subregion. Under the scheme, each borrower is offered up to US$4 million (K6.06 billion) in credit facility for a maximum 85 percent of purchase value.

World Bank has provided a low-interest loan of $60 million to the Royal Government of Cambodia to upgrade the quality of National Road No.3 and National Road No. 7 with a total length of 218 kilometer. Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol signed a contract with Korea Consultants International (KCI) from the World Bank on Wednesday afternoon to monitor and support the implementation of the road improvement projects.
